A Witch’s Craft: Poetry & Panel II

Come join a coven of poets & thinkers as they read their most delicious verse & discuss all their muses from beyond the veil. Celebrating the fast-approaching Samhain with another installment of A Witch’s Craft, this time featuring even more incredible writers, such as:

Written in response the PROMESA bill (Puerto Rico Oversight, Management, and Economic Stability Act) bill,
Raquel Salas Rivera’s
LO TERCIARIO/THE TERTIARY
offers a decolonial queer critique and reconsideration of Marx. The book’s titles come from Pedro Scaron’s, El Capital, the 1976 translation of Karl Marx’s classic. Published by Siglo Veintiuno Editores, this translation was commonly used by the Puerto Rican left as part of political formation programs. Lo terciario/the tertiary places this text in relation to the Puerto Rican debt crisis, forcing readers to reconsider old questions when facing colonialism’s newest horrors.

Tire Fire Presents: McAllister, Brady, Perch, & Captan

Our flagship literary reading series Tire Fire is back with another stellar line up of writers to kick off the spring season at Mom’s. This month’s line up includes:
TOM MCALLISTER is the author of the novels How to Be Safe and The Young Widower’s Handbook. He co-hosts the Book Fight! podcast and works as non-fiction editor for Barrelhouse. He lives in New Jersey and teaches at Temple University.DAN BRADY is the author of the poetry collection Strange Children, forthcoming from Publishing Genius in 2018, and two chapbooks, Cabin Fever / Fossil Record (Flying Guillotine Press) and Leroy Sequences (Horse Less Press). He is the poetry editor of Barrelhouse and lives in Arlington, Virginia with his wife and two kids.

JULIA PERCH is a queer and femme-identified editor, essayist, and poet living and working in West Philly. Her work has appeared in Philadelphia Stories, bedfellows, Word Riot, Shape Magazine, Prick of the Spindle, and others. She runs a low-key poetry vlog and deciphers dreams on Instagram, and tweets about The Bachelor franchise from a feminist lens.

MARYAN NAGY CAPTAN is an Egyptian-American poet, educator, and performer. She is the former art director at APIARY Magazine and teaches experimental writing with The Head & The Hand Press. She is the author of copy/body (Empty Set Press) and is an alumni of The Disquiet International Literary Program. Her work can be found in Mad House, AJAR, APIARY Magazine, Boneless/Skinless, and Sundog Lit.

Through leadership development, media making, organizer training and political education the Philadelphia Student Union gives young people the tools and support they need to be leaders in their schools and communities. Upstairs opens at 6PM, but our “doors” open at 7, and the reading starts around 8.

D. FOY is the author of the novels Made to Break and Patricide. His work has appeared in Guernica, Salon, Hazlitt, Post Road, Electric Literature, BOMB, The Literary Review, Midnight Breakfast, The Scofield, and The Georgia Review, among others, and has been included in the books Laundromat, Forty Stories: New Writing from Harper Perennial, and A Moment’s Notice.

TOBIAS CARROLL is the managing editor of Vol.1 Brooklyn. He is the author of the novel Reel (Rare Bird Books) and the short story collection Transitory (Civil Coping Mechanisms). His writing has been published by Tin House, Rolling Stone, Hazlitt, Men’s Journal, and elsewhere.

HILARY PLUM is the author of the work of nonfiction Watchfires and the novel They Dragged Them Through the Streets. With Zach Savich she edits Rescue Press’s Open Prose Series. She lives in Philadelphia.

GABRIEL OJEDA-SAGUE is Miami <-> Philly, child of Cuban exiles and Puerto Ricans. His first book Oil and Candle (Timeless, Infinite Light 2016) is a set of poems on Santería and the precarity of Latino-American lives. He is also the author of the chapbooks JOGS (2013), Nite [Chickadee]’s (Gauss PDF 2015), Where Everything is in Halves (Be About It 2015), and “Yo” Quiere Decir Sunburn” (2016). He has just finished a new manuscript on Jazzercise.

All donations from our December reading will go to the Mazzoni Center, a local LGBTQ health provider. We raised $300 at our November reading.
