Tire Fire Presents: Machado, K., Johnson-Valenzuela & Eisenberg

November is gonna be BIG! This month’s Tire Fire literary event features NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST Carmen Machado, honorary Philadelphian Dave K., triple threat (author/educator/dj) Marissa Johnson-Valenzuela & noted writer of fiction and frump Emma Eisenberg.

All donations collected will be sent to Juntos, “a community-led, Latinx immigrant organization in South Philadelphia fighting for our human rights as workers, parents, youth, and immigrants. We believe that every human being has the right to a quality education and the freedom to live with dignity regardless of immigration status.”  And, as always, TMoms will be matching every donation.

CARMEN MARIA MACHADO’S debut short story collection, Her Body and Other Parties, is a finalist for the National Book Award and the Kirkus Prize, and the winner of the Bard Fiction Prize. She is a fiction writer, critic, and essayist whose work has appeared in the New Yorker, Granta, Tin House, Guernica, Electric Literature, AGNI, NPR, Gulf Coast, Los Angeles Review of Books, VICE, and elsewhere. Her stories have been reprinted in Best American Science Fiction & Fantasy, Best Horror of the Year, Year’s Best Weird Fiction, and Best Women’s Erotica. Her memoir House in Indiana is forthcoming in 2019 from Graywolf Press.
She holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and has been awarded fellowships and residencies from the Michener-Copernicus Foundation, the Elizabeth George Foundation, the CINTAS Foundation, the Speculative Literature Foundation, the Clarion Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers’ Workshop, the University of Iowa, the Yaddo Corporation, Hedgebrook, and the Millay Colony for the Arts. She is the Artist in Residence at the University of Pennsylvania, and lives in Philadelphia with her wife.

DAVE K. writes for Adweek and Barnes & Noble, and his fiction/essays/poetry have appeared in Front Porch Journal, Battered Suitcase, Cobalt, Artichoke Haircut, The Avenue, Welter, TRUCK, and on the LED billboard in the Station North neighborhood of Baltimore, MD. He is also the author of stone a pig and MY NAME IS HATE, both self-published. He is also a very large outer main-belt asteroid.

MARISSA JOHNSON-VALENZUELA is a writer, professor and sometimes DJ. Her writing has been recognized by The Leeway Foundation, Hedgebrook and others, and has been published in Make/shift, As Us Journal, The Rust Belt Rising, APIARY, Aster(ix), Solstice, Big Bell and elsewhere. She is a VONA and LAMBDA fellow and is currently working on editing the 2015 Lambda writing fellows anthology. She teaches at the Community College of Philadelphia.

EMMA COPLEY EISENBERG is a writer of fiction and nonfiction based in West Philadelphia. She is the author of The Third Rainbow Girl, forthcoming from Hachette Books in 2019, and her work has appeared or is forthcoming in places like Granta, American Short Fiction, The Los Angeles Review of Books, The New Republic, Salon, Slate, AGNI, ZZVZZYA, and others.
