A Night of Sapphic Poetry
For you, beautiful women, my thoughts are unchanging.
The Greek poet Sappho composed heart-wrenching verses of lesbian love over two thousand years ago. Now her lyrics exist only in scattered fragments. Still, they have inspired WLW lovers and artists through millennia, enduring as some of the most potent queer love poetry in human history.Join us for a night of reading Sappho’s remaining lyrics and composing our own Sappho-inspired poetry, which will be shared open mic-style. Miriam Kamil, Sappho expert and classics professor at Bryn Mawr College, will lead our exploration through Sappho’s work, followed by a sapphic poetry-writing workshop led by Philadelphia-based, award-winning queer poets Maya Workowski and Sarah Gamard.
